Kitchen Clash: Whiskey and Ginger 7.9/16 RECAP

Coming off an exciting event in June, Kitchen Clash returned to the fabulous, two story, former Andy Warhol apartment they used in March for another incredible cook-off between Chef Adrienne Cheatham and Chef Jose DeJesus. We had over sixty people watch as each chef charmed and wowed the crowd with their impressive skills.

Our chefs were excited to show their skills. Chef Adrienne Cheatham worked her way up in the kitchen at Le Bernardin, and now carries such credits as Executive Chef at Streetbird, and Chef de Cuisine at Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster. Her opponent, Chef Jose DeJesus, has served as Sous Chef at Eataly and David Burke and later became Executive Sous Chef at La Marina NYC. The competition started early for the chefs as they traded slight jabs over text message.

That’s just what happens when you bring two talented, confident chefs into this competition. Each chef was excited about the theme for the evening: Whiskey and Ginger! All they needed to do to wear the Kitchen Clash Winner’s Apron was to turn that theme into a plate the audience would love.

Chef Jose made the crowd’s mouth water as he put his dish together. His final dish was grilled pork belly, black rice whiskey risotto with fresh corn, ginger pickled pico de gallo, topped with a crispy chicken skin! Everyone gobbled up this amazing dish, especially raving about the risotto.

While the audience devoured that dish, Chef Adrienne countered with salmon three ways! She made a bourbon glazed salmon over sushi rice “tostones” and topped with summer succotash, accompanied by a salmon ceviche over a crispy fish skin! There are always two winners in Kitchen Clash – one is the partygoer and the other is only one of the chefs. And this time around, with the votes the closest they’ve ever been, that chef was Chef Adrienne!! She really kept the crowd on its toes – taking her time to fix up the fish head for the audience midway through the event.

Kitchen Clash became very interactive this time around when Chef Adrienne asked for two excited volunteers to roll rice balls. Despite losing count, they managed to get the job done and have a good time (and wound up taking credit for the victory themselves).
